Indian capital’s air quality worsens as people defy firecracker ban on Diwali night

NEW DELHI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) — A thick toxic haze engulfed the Indian capital city New Delhi and its outskirts Friday as people ignored the local government’s ban on the sale of firecrackers to ensure cracker-free festivities.
Media reported on Thursday evening that people in Delhi and the national capital region set off firecrackers heavily to celebrate Diwali (Hindu festival of lights) pushing pollution and noise levels much above the warning mark. The bursting of fireworks continued throughout the night choking the air.
The online indicators of the pollution monitoring stations in the city Friday morning glowed red, indicating a “very poor” air quality.
Authorities have cautioned people with heart or lung ailments, and aged people and children should avoid prolonged or heavy physical exertion. ■
